It’s natural for Steven Pearl to be compared to his father, Bruce Pearl, and his legacy at the Auburn Tigers. The newly minted head coach succeeded his father to become the Tigers’ head coach, leading the program to a 22-16 record but failing to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
However, he was able to redeem himself by winning the 2026 NIT Championship as the Tigers defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane men’s basketball 92–86 in overtime in the title game.
After a roller coaster of a game, which saw Auburn blowing up a 21-point lead to requiring a 3-pointer from Kevin Overton to force OT, Steven shared his honest reflection on Auburn’s 2025-26 season with strong words:
“I want the Auburn family to remember this group for the resilience and toughness.”
Steven Pearl inherited a Final Four team from his father, Bruce, who retired after one of the best seasons in program history, receiving the No. 1 seed. His departure transitioned Auburn from an elite contender to a rebuilding program overnight.
With Bruce’s departure, Auburn witnessed a mass exodus, requiring it to replace all of its production. They lost all five starters from the previous season’s Final Four team. Only a few contributors like Tahaad Pettiford remained. Therefore, before fans started to call out Steven for underdelivering, they must know that Steven inherited a completely retooled, inexperienced squad.
Steven rebuilt the Tigers from scratch, including strong transfer portal activity, JUCO players and lower-division additions to combine them with a few returning pieces. Steven led the SEC program to a 7-11 conference record, taking them to the first NIT title for an SEC program since 2006.
