Sports analyst Adam Schefter made a bold claim in his recent appearance on fellow sports analyst Pat McAfee’s show, where he named his top pick for the 2028 NBA Draft. According to Schefter, Marcus Spears Jr., the son of former NFL defensive end Marcus Spears, will be the first overall pick two years from now.
Currently, the younger Spears is projected to enter college basketball as a member of the 2027 recruiting class. Schefter shared that he received the selection from a source and that it resonated with him.
Spears Jr. is currently ranked as the No. 1 overall five-star recruit among all prospects in his class. The Dallas, Texas native just wrapped up his junior year of high school hoops with Dynamic Prep High School. The 6’9 forward will enter his final season come the 2026-27 campaign.
“ Neither here nor there, it’s offbeat, but I thought it was worth sharing, is I had somebody tell me that in two years, in two years, Marcus Spears’ son is going to be the number one pick in the NBA draft…Number one,” Schefter said.

Spears Jr. has shown interest in pursuing a career in basketball, unlike his father, who played football throughout his career. Marcus Spears played in the NFL for eight years, starting his career with the Dallas Cowboys before concluding it with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013. He was the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft after he played four seasons with the LSU Tigers.
Marcus Spears Jr. recently talked about the Texas Longhorns visiting him
In an interview with Jacob Polacheck on On3 on Saturday, May 16, Marcus Spears was asked about the Kentucky Wildcats, the LSU Tigers, and the Texas Longhorns all visiting him. Per 247Sports, Spears’ interest in the Longhorns is growing warmer. When talking about Texas coach Sean Miller visiting him, Spears shared that he adored seeing his team play better in the latter half of the 2025-26 season.
“I was talking to coach Miller when he came earlier in the season. He said they were going to pick up slowly, but surely. That’s what they did. I realized that he knew what he was doing. They were struggling early, but they picked it up. I really wanted to see if they were going to pick it up, and they did. That just shows how good a coach he is. He knows what he’s doing, so that was good. It was obviously a good talk. I like what they’re doing over there. It’ll be interesting,” Spears was quoted as saying.
