Former Boston Celtics Guard RJ Luis Jr. Returning To Will Wade’s LSU Leaves Fans Fuming: “Gotta Be Illegal”

RJ Luis Jr. wasn’t having the NBA breakout that he wanted. While most in his shoes in NBA history have either white-knuckled their way through their career or washed out to another line of work, Luis chose another route. Luis chose what many college graduates do after their starry dreams don’t work out, and went back to college.

According to a Tuesday report from Pete Nakos via On3, Luis signed with the LSU Tigers, joining coach Will Wade and the rest of the squad.

“Former pro guard RJ Luis Jr. has signed with LSU, Pete Nakos reports🐯 Luis was the 2025 Big East player of the year,” the report read.

Fans reacted to the report in droves, slamming the development and expressing displeasure.

“this gotta be illegal,” one posted.

“Do teams have no shame? Do players have no shame?” another asked.

“I’d be absolutely embarrassed if I were this guy and an LSU fan,” one posted.

More fans reacted to the news, expressing frustration, disbelief and the perceived absurdity of it all.

“I will never get how this is allowed ever like you made that decision to leave College just to eventually spin back,” one vented.

“How much NIL is this guy getting? Another $5 Million?? Ridiculous,” another replied.

“The ncaa really has lost its grip on this lmao,” one declared.

The decision to return to school will extend Luis’ career into a fourth season after spending two seasons with the St. John’s Red Storm and one with the UMass Minutemen.

RJ Luis Jr. Eyes Surge In Prove-It Moment

For RJ Luis Jr., the 2026 season may feel similar as a return to the college format, but the stakes will be sky-high. As a college basketball player turned pro turned college athlete, he will need to jump off the screen in a way he never has. While 2025 showed an impressive 18.2 points per game of production, it seemingly wasn’t with a big enough program to get a strong case in the NBA beyond opening a roster spot.

This time around, at LSU, Luis will need to maintain a better level of production with a bigger spotlight to make NBA teams risk signing him after a history of turning tail at the first sign of trouble.

Will Luis be able to dominate enough to carve his way back into the NBA, or was his return to college a one-way trip?
