The whole college basketball world is mourning the recent passing of a well-known figure from the Michigan State Spartans community. Spartans coach Tom Izzo has been vocal and public throughout his career for the love and adoration he has for his mother, Dorothy.
Dorothy Izzo has been a courtside staple for the Spartans faithful for how many games she has attended in support of her son. On Thursday, May 28, the collegiate hoops world received news that Dorothy Izzo has passed away at 100-years-old. Her obituary reportedly states that she died on May 19 at a senior living facility in Appleton, Wisconsin, which comes just six days after her birthday on May 13.
Since then, members of the Michigan State University community and beyond have mourned her passing.
College basketball fans and spectators have since come together to send out condolences to Tom Izzo and his family.
“RIP to the goat ❤️❤️,” one fan reposted with a couple of red heart emojis.
“God Bless you, Dorothy. Prayers for Tom and his family,” another fan said.
“🙏🏻 for the Izzo family and friends along with the MSU community,” another user shared with an emoji.
“Nothing but respect the the Izzo family. Prayers 🙏✝️,” a fan posted with emojis.
Other users all over X/Twitter paid tribute to Dorothy Izzo for the impact she made on her family and the Michigan State community overall.

“Hell of a run. Rest in peace, Mrs Izzo,” another user wrote.
“We play for Mama Izzo this year,” a fan asserted.
As the offseason continues, Tom Izzo will eventually head back into his coaching duties in honor of his mother, who was such an avid fan of sports, especially the Spartans’ men’s basketball team. The current longest-tenured coach in the Big Ten conference has not won a national title since the year 2000, as he aims for that goal in the 2026-27 season.

In the 2024-25 season, Tom Izzo won their final regular season game over the arch rivals, coach Dusty May and the Michigan Wolverines, by 17 points, 79-62. After the game, Dorothy Izzo was interviewed on the court by reporter Owen Oszust of WILXTV. She was asked about how proud she is of her son, especially since the win earned the Spartans the 2025 Big Ten conference regular season title.
”I just can’t believe it. I can’t believe it that he’s just done so well, and he, growing up, he was just a plain kid, and now he’s gotten so, so much fame. It’s amazing to me,” Dorothy Izzo shared.
