The Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball program has largely remained out of controversies under head coach Dusty May. The biggest scandal of late includes Yaxel Lendeborg claiming Kentucky offered him $7-9 million to transfer, but he chose Michigan for development. In response, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope called the claim false.
Apart from this, Lendeborg has been at the center of multiple head-scratching, poor-behaviour moments. His conduct during the NCAA Tournament, where he slammed an opponent, was questionable, but other than that, the program isn’t attracting attention for the wrong reasons.
During his recent conversation with Dan Dakich, May was asked whether his team has survived distractions.
“Yeah, for the most part, these guys, they’re pretty normal dudes,” May said. “They get in the gym, they work, they hang out with each other, they play video games. Obviously, this is one of your biggest scandals when Yaxel said he was going to put a belt to Purdue’s a**. Other than that, it’s been pretty drama free. But those are the things that just are part of learning and growing. But yeah, we haven’t had much going on. It’s been pretty normal for us and not a lot of drama.”
Dusty May’s Michigan’s Biggest Focus Is Winning
Adding to his thoughts, Dusty May also shared what it’s like inside the Michigan locker room. May calls the group “mature,” revealing there’s ” a great psychological safety in our group.” While he doesn’t hide from the fact that everyone has “weaknesses” and “flaws,” they are constantly trying to improve.
May further shares that everyone tries to improve the other in terms of behaviour. However, he said, there is even a bigger agenda that is central to his program and that is winning.
“First and foremost, everyone wants to win. I mean, we start everything with the job is to win. And then after the win, we can focus on development, we can focus on all the other things. But let’s keep in mind, we’re all here to do one thing primarily, and that’s to win and do it in a certain way and style,” May said.
May and Michigan are preparing for the Final Four encounter against the Arizona Wildcats as they aim to reach the national championship game.
