The North Carolina Tar Heels are going against the Pittsburgh Panthers today without their star freshman Caleb Wilson. The power forward recently suffered a fracture in his left hand and is currently unavailable for his team.
Wilson’s potential return isn’t even in the picture, as the Tar Heels are waiting for further assessments to determine how long it will take him to come back. Amid the uncertainty around his future, Dick Vitale chimed in with his take.
Vitale believes that Wilson’s injury might be worse than what’s being imagined right now. As per Vitale, the Tar Heels’ power forward wouldn’t be able to join his team this season.
“I feel so bad for Caleb Wilson and all the Tar Heels fans,” Vitale said. “He’s probably done for the year; they don’t know that for sure yet.”
Interestingly, Wilson doesn’t think that the season is over for him. After his injury during the Miami game, he responded to a fan on X.
“That is why it was super important to make sure you didn’t take a player like Caleb Wilson for granted. It can be over just like that,” the fan wrote.
“It’s not over,” Wilson responded.
Contrary to Vitale’s prediction, Wilson thinks that he can make a full recovery and be ready to join the Tar Heels this season. We’ll have to wait and see whether he’s right in his assessment or not.
It’s likely that Wilson isn’t coming back. Although his recovery timeline will heavily depend on the extent of his injury, coming back from a fracture isn’t an easy thing to pull off.
Wilson has been averaging nearly 20 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while shooting over 57% from the field in 24 games. Needless to say, the Tar Heels would like to have him back in rotation.
North Carolina Doesn’t Have a Clear Timeline for Caleb Wilson
Wilson suffered a fracture in his left hand during a game against the Miami Hurricanes. The Tar Heels ended up losing the game 66-75. Wilson’s fracture wasn’t detected immediately.
As per the team’s statement, an X-ray was done during the game against Miami. The reports didn’t indicate any fracture, which is why Wilson was able to come back and play in the second half.
However, when imaging was done in Chapel Hill, the reports showed a fracture in his left hand. The school stated in the official announcement that there was no clear timeline available for Wilson’s return. “The evaluation process is ongoing to determine the timetable for Wilson’s return,” the announcement said.
There are a lot of conflicting opinions on Wilson’s injury and what it means for his future. We’ll have to wait for an official update from the school to get a better understanding of his situation.
