After a single season at NC State and following a couple of years at McNeese, the LSU Tigers have decided that Will Wade has washed away the sins that led them to fire him in 2022. The coach will be leaving the Wolfpack after a 20-14 season, to return to Baton Rouge, where Matt McMahon will likely be fired this week.
Here are some potential replacements for Wade at Raleigh, North Carolina.
Top 5 Candidates Who Could Replace Will Wade at NC State
5. Bucky McMillan (Texas A&M)

McMillan has only been at College Station for one year, but in the process, he was able to take them to the NCAA Tournament, continuing Buzz Williams’ streak of Big Dance appearances. Before that, he turned Samford into a Southern Conference and took them to just their third March Madness appearance in program history. At NC State, he could challenge for bigger things than a first-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
4. Pat Kelsey (Louisville)

Kelsey has proved he’s ACC material by leading the Louisville Cardinals for two moderately successful seasons in which they have reached the NCAA Tournament. While they have not gone beyond the second round of the Big Dance, they did tie for No. 2 in the overall conference standings in their first season there. Before that, he created consistent teams at Charleston and Winthrop, winning multiple Big South and CAA regular-season and tournament championships, while taking them to several NCAA Tournaments.
3. Bob Richey (Furman)

It’s long overdue for Bob Richey to get a bigger challenge than Furman. He has been at the school since 2016, achieving a very good 203–94 overall record in the process. Richey also helped them win a SoCon regular season and tournament title in 2022-23, and has also taken them to the NCAA Tournament and the NIT Tournament twice each. However, the Paladins don’t have the resources to make a serious March Madness run. The Wolfpack does.
2. Niko Medved (Colorado State)

Medved started his career at Furman in the early 2010s, before a one-season stint at Drake. However, it was at Colorado State that he took his coaching to the next level. Over seven seasons, he took them to the NCAA Tournament three times and won one regular-season championship with the Rams. That earned him a promotion to a Power Four program in the form of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, which hasn’t turned out for the best, with a regular season record of 15-17. Why not a lateral move to Raleigh for a change of air?
1. Josh Schertz (Saint Louis)

Schertz has proven to be a Division II coach with the pedigree to handle a Division I program. Between 2008 and 2021, he turned Lincoln Memorial into one of the best Division II programs, and at Indiana State and particularly at Saint Louis, he showed he can be a serious Division I coach, taking the Billikens to the second round of the NCAA Tournament just this year. They also won the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season championship. He seems ready for a Power Four school chance.
