Mark Pope is on a mission to address all the problems Kentucky fans have with their program at the moment, and it’s clear that this was never going to be an easy task.
The Wildcats have had a tough time in the transfer portal this year, with several players being linked, but hardly anyone committing to Pope’s squad ahead of the new campaign.
They famously missed out on the top recruit in the 2026 class in Tyran Stokes this month, but at the same time, Pope’s efforts to pry Marcio Santos from Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel also fell flat, with the Brazilian committing to LSU instead.
Much was made about Pope’s long flight and visit to the Israeli capital to go witness Santos in action, with Israeli media deeming Kentucky “very desperate” in their attempts, and things have only got worse since Santos announced he would be joining rivals LSU, with Will Wade leading the charge in the coming season.
Mark Pope addressed a question that can only be about Santos in his latest attempt to please Kentucky fans, giving a three-word answer when questioned about the major miss.
“That’s not true”, Mark Pope said, answering a question about an International athlete who allegedly committed elsewhere before Pope even went to see him, which can only be about Santos in this case.
Tough Season in the Works for Kentucky
While Pope maintains that Santos had not committed to LSU by the time he got to Tel Aviv to witness him in action and persuade him to join the Lexington outfit, it’s clear that his convincing powers have greatly reduced.
Tyran Stokes was a Kentucky kid who decided Kansas was a better fit for him, and without big names leading the charge this season, things only appear to be heading downwards for the Wildcats.
