The North Carolina Tar Heels made a first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament under Hubert Davis. After a decent regular season run, they lost to the VCU Rams in the first round, and that brought Davis’ tenure to an end.
Firing Davis had become necessary for the program due to piling pressure and the need for a change in leadership. At the same time, letting him go was the easy thing to do, as finding a new coach is where things get tricky for programs.
The Tar Heels are looking for every possible option in the best interest of the program. There are some credible coaches that they might pursue, but it’s not going to be easy. However, if UNC were to listen to CBS Sports’ Chris Walker, he has a recommendation for them.
During a recent March Madness broadcast on CBS Sports, Walker said that if Carolina wants to win, they should hire John Calipari.
“Carolina, if you want to win, go hire John Calipari,” he said. “If you wanted to become what it used to be, every kid wanted to go there…Go hire John Calipari and watch what happens. Forget about all the stuff that you think comes with him, you bring that guy there, the world changes.”
Walker believes that UNC should not worry about NIL money or Calipari’s past record. In his opinion, if they bring Calipari, who has nearly 40 years of head coaching experience, he will bring the good old days back.
Calipari had a 15-year run with the Kentucky Wildcats from 2009 to 2024. As the pressure kept mounting, he left Kentucky and joined the Arkansas Razorbacks. He has taken his team to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances.
Is Michael Jordan Helping UNC Find Hubert Davis’ Replacement?
Before Michael Jordan dominated the NBA and became arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, he represented the North Carolina Tar Heels. MJ was an NCAA Champion with UNC and developed his game during a four-year run.
Long after retiring from basketball, Jordan has maintained his relationship with the program. After Davis was fired, rumors started floating around that MJ was helping UNC find his replacement. UNC insider Greg Barnes refuted the rumors during an appearance on OutKick Hot Mic.
“Michael Jordan certainly is connected to the program,” he said. “He’s not as overly involved as a lot of other people. Why that is…I can’t exactly explain. I don’t know if it’s a matter of not wanting to interfere too much or if he’s so focused on NASCAR and some other things.”
Even though MJ isn’t directly involved in the head coach search, the Tar Heels need to put a name and face in the vacant position. It’s going to be a long and thorough search as it’ll dictate the future of the program.
