John Calipari and Arkansas have been busy in the offseason. Apart from the two transfer portal additions, the Razorbacks also have four promising freshmen in the ranks. Arkansas had a decent Sweet 16 run last season. They would be looking to go beyond that this year.
They had an immense talent in Darius Acuff Jr., but with him declaring for the draft, Arkansas needed their next big star, and they might have just found him. 7’0 Finnish forward Miikka Muurinen has committed to Arkansas. The 5-star recruit is well known for his versatility, shooting prowess, and athleticism.
However, there are a few reservations about Muurinen’s capabilities. NCAA analyst Jeff Goodman commented about some possible shortcomings of Miika Muurinen.
“I really like him talent-wise. I remember when we saw him two years ago at the Peach Jam, I was blown away,” Goodman said.
Goodman remembered how he judged the forward to be super athletic, bouncy, and how he can run the court well. He then discussed how he started playing in Europe. He was put up against pros but couldn’t get much game time. He also mentioned how he lacks a little flexibility and a three-point shooting average at best.
“But I talked to one person, very, very familiar with his game just a little while ago and got kind of a scouting report on you know his game a little bit. And then obviously off the court stuff that has plagued him here with some of the red flags that have caused some big-time teams and programs to back off Miikka Muurinen lately,” he added.
How can Miikka Muurinen help John Calipari’s Arkansas?
Goodman shared how Miikka is a player who plays with an edge, plays with a chip on his shoulder, plays hard, and looks the part. His size is a huge advantage. He is mobile and has the capability to surprise opponents. He was even getting considered as the second-best player in the class after Tyran Stokes.
Goodman heaped praise on him, saying:
“And you know here’s what they said basically his vertical ability is off the charts. He can play at the top of the glass. We saw that.”
