Jalen Reed To Return to LSU, Strengthening Tigers’ Frontcourt for Next Season

Jalen Reed is back in Baton Rouge. The 6’10” LSU forward is returning to Tigers for his senior season, he told On3’s Joe Tipton. Reed averaged 11.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and one block in eight games before going down with a torn right knee ligament in December.

Jalen Reed is returning to the LSU Tigers

The Tiger’s captain tore his anterior cruciate ligament early in an 85-75 win over Florida State Dec. 3. Reed started all eight games he played for LSU, dropping 21 points and 13 rebounds in 48 minutes in a 109-102 triple overtime win over UCF in late November at the Greenbrier Tip-Off. He was shooting 60.4% from the field before he went down.

Reed, a Castaic, California native, was a four-star recruit in the class of 2022, a top 80 recruit in the country. He was heavily recruited by several teams, making visits to Florida, Ole Miss, Washington State, and Arizona State before committing to LSU — without a visit.

In his first two years at LSU, Reed played 65 games, starting 11 in his freshman year and 20 in his sophomore year. Under head coach Matt McMahon, he developed into a solid starter, improving his shooting percentage and all five major stats in each season.

After a 7-1 start to the season, LSU finished the season 14-18 without Reed, going 3-15 in SEC play, good for 15th in the conference. They were eliminated by Mississippi State in the first round of the SEC tournament in a 91-62 loss.

Now, in year four under McMahon, the team will look for their first over .500 record in conference play since 2020-21 under Will Wade, and their first NCAA tournament bid since 2022.

With the return of Reed, there is optimism for the Tigers, but with guards Mike Williams and Tyrell Ward and forward Corey Chest announcing their entrance to the portal, there are still holes to fill in Baton Rouge.
