Kentucky Point guard Jaland Lowe plans to enter the transfer portal after one season in Lexington, as per On3. The 6-foot-1 junior appeared in just nine games this season after suffering a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery.
He played in fewer than 30% games for Kentucky and was eligible to qualify for a medical redshirt, giving him two additional years of eligibility.
That’s a lot of runway for a guard who averaged 16.8 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game during his breakout sophomore season at Pittsburgh. Lowe was a third team All-ACC selection before he arrived at Kentucky.
Now, the question is, where will Lowe go next? Here are some of the five programs that might make the cut.
5. Oregon Ducks
Oregon has lost two of its top players Jackson Shelstad and Kwame Evans Jr., both are planning to enter the transfer portal. Shelstad’s departure has left a massive void at the lead guard spot.
Lowe would immediately step in as primary ball handler for a program that desperately needs one. Dana Altman has always been precise with his portal choices and getting Lowe could give him a proven playmaker with experience in power conference settings.
4. Houston Cougars
Houston might likely have have to part with its entire perimeter group since Sharp and Uzan are out of eligibility and Flemings is a projected NBA draft lottery pick. Kelvin Sampson’s system is a physical, demanding, and defense-first kind.
However, for Lowe’s ability to create live-ball turnovers and get to the free-throw line, the fit makes more sense than it looks on paper. Houston needs a guard like Lowe and this could be a lucrative decision for the junior.
3. Iowa State Cyclones
TJ Otzelberger’s offense is ineffective without a dynamic point guard. That’s one of the first positions he is looking to fill in this portal. If Tamin Lipsey departs for the NBA, the Cyclones could fill this position with Jaland Lowe.
Lowe’s ability to run the pick and roll at an elite level creates the perfect combination for Otzelberger’s offense. The Big 12 would be a step up in competition from his Pitt days, but Lowe has already played SEC ball. He could fit in well and handle the physicality of Big 12 too.
2. Pitt Panthers
Going back to Pittsburgh is one of the most likely scenarios as well. Jeff Capel needs guards and Pitt’s roster took a noticeable step back this season since Lowe’s departure. Sometimes the best move forward could be returning to familiar territory.
1. Miami Hurricanes
Jaland Lowe has ties to Jai Lucas, with Lucas reportedly being the godfather of the Kentucky guard. This personal connection puts the Miami Hurricanes in the top of list of colleges Lowe could choose.
Miami already runs a guard-heavy system, and adding a proven playmaker with two years of eligibility would be a statement move for Lucas. The ACC gives Lowe a conference he already dominated in, and South Florida is not a hard sell either. This could be a likely spot for Lowe to land.
