Bill Self just finished his 23rd season with the Kansas Jayhawks. Their journey in this year’s NCAA Tournament ended with a second-round loss (67-65) to the St. John’s Red Storm. Following this loss, rumors surfaced that he might be considering retirement.
As the situation surrounding Self’s future remains uncertain, an old interview with Kansas Jayhawks assistant coach Jacque Vaughn is making rounds on the internet. Two weeks ago, he sat down for a discussion with KSHB 41 reporter Matt Foster.
Foster asked Vaughn if he had any interest in taking over as the next head coach of Kansas after Bill Self.
“One of the most prestigious programs in college basketball,” Vaughn replied. “Who wouldn’t want to be part of that future going forward. But I don’t know that future. I am a Jayhawk forever, and where that leads, we’ll see.”
Jacque Vaughn has not completely shut down the idea of becoming the next head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks. He played for the program during his collegiate career before the Utah Jazz drafted him in the 1997 NBA Draft. In four seasons, he played in 126 games and averaged 9.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 6.4 assists.
Vaughn began his coaching career as an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs in 2010. He also served as the head coach of the Orlando Magic and the Brooklyn Nets. Bill Self hired him last year to serve as his assistant.
Bill Self Gets Honest About Potential Retirement
After Sunday’s loss to St. John’s, Bill Self said he was undecided on his future. He has been dealing with health concerns and was hospitalized temporarily back in January.
During the postgame press conference, the 63-year-old said he will take his time before finalizing a decision.
“No, I haven’t decided yet,” Self said. “I’ll get back and visit with family. I’ve had obviously some issues off the court, health-wise. And that will be discussed. But I love what I do. I want to feel good while I’m doing it, though. We’ll get back, and we’ll discuss that when we get back.”
However, on Wednesday, Bill Self addressed the rumors surrounding his retirement, saying that all of it was “B.S. Bad info.” In 23 seasons, Self has put up a 634-167 overall record with Kansas and has won two national championships with them.
