After a grueling five months of regular-season hoops, the top NCAA Division 1 basketball programs are all vying for a spot in the most awaited postseason March Madness tournament set to begin later this March.
The Northern Iowa Panthers, the sixth seed of the conference, emerged triumphant over the fifth-seeded Illinois-Chicago Flames to be crowned as the champions of the Missouri Valley Conference. Their 84-69 win over the Illinois-based program has granted them a qualification for March Madness.
This victory made Northern Iowa the lowest-seeded team ever to win the Missouri Valley Conference, whilst also becoming the first team ever to win four games in four days to clinch the conference title.

Garnering an overall record of 23-12 and a conference record of 11-9, the Panthers are now on their way to March Madness; however, their seeding, bracket, and opponents will only be revealed on Selection Sunday, slated to begin on 15th March, 2026.
Northern Iowa NCAA Tournament History
The Panthers’ March Madness qualification story is nothing short of a dream. Not only did the Northern Iowa program win four games in four days to ensure qualification, but they are now set to return to the NCAA tournament after a whole decade.
Historically, the Panthers have played in the NCAA tournament a total of 8 times, with their last appearance coming back in 2016, where they lost in the second round of the tournament. Meanwhile, the Panthers also played in the 2015 edition of March Madness, where they reached the third round under the stewardship of head coach Ben Jacobson, who’s now been with the program for 20 years and counting.
Northern Iowa has amassed a total of four first-round NCAA appearances in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2009, coupled with another second-round exit back in 1990. However, their best-ever March Madness performance came in the year 2010 when they lost to Michigan State 52-59 in the Midwest regional semifinal.
Given the current momentum the Panthers are in, it won’t come as a shock if they shatter some more records and go well beyond what’s expected of them later this March.
