Kiyan Anthony is coming back to Syracuse for the 2026-27 season, the freshman guard officially announced his return on Wednesday for a sophomore season by posting a simple message on Instagram:
“I’m Back.”
The decision comes at a crucial time for the program as it is entering a new era under head coach Gerry McNamara.
The 6-foot-5 guard, son of Carmelo Anthony, has mirrored his father’s path by choosing Syracuse. And now, instead of taking a different route, he’s opting to stay and develop.

Some saw it as a major win for Syracuse.
“Big W for Syracuse! Kiyan back with a new coach,” one fan wrote.
Others focused on development, suggesting the decision was necessary.
“I love the fact he’s returning… definitely not an NBA prospect yet,” another user posted.
“Carmelo probably wouldn’t let him leave,” a fan joked.
“Great decision, McNamara played with Carmelo and Melo trusts him completely with his son.” another wrote.
A Fresh Start Under Gerry McNamara
Kiyan’s return also coincides with a major coaching shift. After a disappointing 15-17 season that saw Syracuse miss the NCAA Tournament, longtime head coach Adrian Autry was let go. The program turned to McNamara, a former Syracuse star who famously won the 2003 national championship alongside Carmelo.
McNamara is someone who understands the program’s history and has a direct link to the Anthony family. Carmelo himself has publicly backed the hire, believing McNamara can help bring out the best in his son.
On the court, Kiyan showed flashes of success during his freshman campaign, averaging 8.0 points per game while primarily coming off the bench. He delivered multiple strong performances but also faced inconsistency, which is expected at this stage.
With a full offseason ahead and a new coaching staff in place, expectations will only rise for the program.
