The college basketball world was left stunned after news broke involving Mike Krzyzewski’s grandson, Joseph Savarino. According to the reports, Savarino allegedly struck the teenager while driving a Ford Explorer on Saturday night.
Authorities confirmed that a breathalyzer test recorded his blood-alcohol concentration at 0.11%, above the legal limit of 0.08%. He also reportedly admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening.
He was later released on a $100,000 bond, which was posted by his mother, Debbie Savarino. At the time of writing his driver’s license has been revoked, and the case remains under investigation.

Many fans expressed outrage over what they perceive as potential preferential treatment due to Savarino’s family ties.

While Mike Krzyzewski has long been one of the most respected figures in college sports, the situation has drawn skepticism. For many, the incident represents a case on accountability, privilege, and the justice system.
Also, this is not the first legal issue involving the family. Savarino’s brother, Michael, was also previously arrested on DWI-related charges in 2021.
For now, the legal process is ongoing, and Savarino is scheduled to appear in court again on May 20.
