“Doesn’t Shock Me”: Pat Kelsey Comments on Dusty May’s NBA Move With Peek Into Their Relationship

Dusty May is heading off to greener pastures as his future seems to be in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks, and it isn’t just his Michigan players who are going to miss the head coach who led the Wolverines to the national championship last season, but it appears some of his peers might too.

Pat Kelsey was asked about Dusty May’s decision to go up to the NBA and leave Michigan as a result, and he shed some light on his own relationship with the coach along with explaining why the Mavericks have got a great man leading their team.

“It doesn’t shock me,” Kelsey said. “Dusty’s one of the best coaches in our profession. I’ve known Dusty a long time, we kind of came up in the business around the same time. He’s been a guy that I talk to quite a bit, we went to a clinic a couple years ago down at the University of Florida that he spoke at and I spoke at and kinda started a friendship.

“What he did last year, at Michigan, winning a national championship, was incredible and he’s one of the brightest minds in basketball. And obviously the Dallas Mavericks felt the same way and if they make that decision to hire him, it’s a pretty smart decision.”

Dusty May’s Move Affects Players at Michigan

After it became clear that the NBA was where he was heading, the next question was bound to be around the players May coached at Michigan.

One of them, Trey McKenney, appears to be continuing at the Wolverines, even if he made it clear that he got to know just as everyone else that his head coach was leaving for the Dallas Mavericks.

“I saw it online just like everybody else,” McKenney said, per the Wolverines Wire.

“So yeah, I was just as shocked as you guys. But I mean, I think my family and just a lot of people around me just always give me the mindset that bumps in the road and life happens. But just to be able to keep going, I mean, people die, coaches get fired, coaches leave, and just life has to keep going on. So that’s just been my whole mindset.”
