There is no doubt that former Kansas Jayhawks guard Darryn Peterson is one of the most highly-touted prospects in this year’s NBA Draft. After all, throughout his one-and-done year of college basketball, Peterson was constantly talked about as potentially the top pick in the draft, or at the very least in the top three. But with the draft being on Tuesday, June 23, Peterson has only worked out with one team: the Washington Wizards.
In a video uploaded by NBA insider Michael Scotto on X/Twitter, Peterson clarified why he passed up working out with the 29 other franchises. Currently, Washington holds the first pick in the draft, which may be a factor. While Peterson did not give an exact reason why he only worked out with the Wizards, he affirmed that he’d be delighted with any team that selects him.
“ Just a decision that was made, but definitely not dodging any team. Wherever it takes me, I’m gonna come in and be delighted to be there. And, wherever that happens to be, they’ll get the best of me, but I’m not dodging any team. I’m ready to play for whoever,” Peterson claimed. (0:00)
Apart from Peterson, his rival, former BYU Cougars forward AJ Dybantsa, could also be selected by the Wizards with the first pick. The Utah Jazz hold the second overall pick, and Dybantsa is being linked there, given his history with the city. Peterson may also end up becoming a member of the Jazz if Washington did not see how he’d fit in their team with the said workout.
An anonymous NBA GM gives the current perspective NBA teams have on Darryn Peterson
Per college basketball insider Jeff Goodman on X/Twitter, NBA teams are terrified of Darryn Peterson’s tendencies, and perhaps his health. While it did stabilize at the end of the year, Peterson dealt with a slew of injuries throughout the 2025-26 campaign. With this, an anonymous NBA general manager told Goodman that while NBA teams know about Peterson’s talent, he is deemed a risky pick.
“Peterson’s the most talented player in this draft. That’s not a debate. But he’s also the most terrifying. I just don’t think Washington can roll the dice on him because they can’t afford to miss on this pick,” the anonymous NBA GM was quoted as saying.
