Nate Ament was a five-star recruit and one of the top players of the 2025 class. He committed to play college basketball for the Tennessee Volunteers and averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.
Ament is now one of the top players in the 2026 NBA draft class and is slated to be a mid-lottery selection. He is projected to land anywhere from No. 6 to No. 13 overall, with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Dallas Mavericks emerging as potential landing spots.
The 6’10 forward is just 19 years old and is about to make basketball history. To understand why he has been able to make such giant leaps in his career, we need to look at his upbringing and the involvement of his parents in this journey.
Ament’s parents are Albert Ament and Godelive Mukankuranga. His father teaches French and was a standout basketball player in his college days. Albert represented Wayne State University, where he is in the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame.
His mother is a nurse and a native of Rwanda who grew up in Italy. She met Albert while he was working there with Catholic Relief Services in the late 1990s. Nate’s mother survived the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi.
Mukankuranga’s journey embodies resilience, and she taught those values to her sons. Nate was able to learn everything about basketball from his father at a young age, and he went on to excel in the sport at the high school and college levels.
The values that Nate grew up with reflect in the way he conducts himself. He takes great pride in being able to represent his Rwandan heritage and honor his mother.
Nate Ament’s Tribute To His Mother
When Nate started getting attention for his game, he decided to give a heartfelt tribute to his mother. At the Hoop Summit, he wore Reeboks that showcased the colors of the Rwandan flag.
“It’s really special for me to be able to do that,” Ament told Andscape. “And it’s a huge tribute to my mom with her hard work and dedication she’s put in and all her hardship that’s comes from Rwanda. It’s a tribute to the country as well.
“I’m trying to pay back to the country what it’s given to me, the perspective of love that I’ve felt from the country and all the support I’m receiving from them,” he added.
Nate was highly impressed by how well the shoes were designed and how the colors of the Rwandan flag fit the design perfectly.
