Dan Hurley’s UConn and Rick Pitino’s St. John’s recently concluded another terrific game of basketball in the Big East tournament championship game. Pitino’s St. John’s have now won back-to-back Big East championships.
The Red Storms are 28-6 as opposed to UConn’s 29-5. Pitino’s team leads the Big East with an 18-2 record, while Hurley’s team is not too far ahead with 17-3. The two sides have met three times this season. The previous two encounters were one each. St. John’s won the first game 81-72. While UConn emerged victorious in the second, 72-40.
While the first game did have some competition between the sides, the second one was a dominant blowout from an impressive Huskies display. However, St. John’s latest victory means the most.
St. John’s were comfortable victors in the end, 72-52. It was a rather flat display around the court for UConn. Tarris Reed Jr was the only one who ended the game with double digits in points. He scored 17 points with 7 rebounds. Alex Karaban had 7 points with 5 rebounds and 5 assists. As for everyone else, it was a pretty average performance. For St. John’s, Zuby Ejiofor almost grabbed a double-double with 18 points and 9 rebounds. He even impressed Dan Hurley.
After the game, Dan Hurley took a special moment while shaking Ejiofor’s hand. He said something to Ejiofor, which seemed like he was appreciating his game and then patted his chest as he walked away. It was clear that despite the loss, Dan Hurley appreciated the great game that St. John’s star had.
