The Duke Blue Devils may be getting one of their key players back, as a new update on star guard Caleb Foster has been made. A report from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein has revealed that Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer is saying that there is a chance that Foster may be able to come back during the Sweet 16 round.
This means Caleb Foster only has a small chance that he could return during their next game, which will be against No. 5 St. John’s. Even so, this is still good news for Duke, as he has been out since March 7, during the final game of the regular season, against eternal rival North Carolina.
Foster injured his right foot during that season final against the Tar Heels, around the first half. He has not played since, but did have some surgery to repair it. Scheyer has previously hinted that some of his players might be returning as March Madness goes on.
“I think the reality of it is we’d have to advance to a Final Four,” he said.. “And is there a chance earlier? I’m not going to eliminate that right now, but I think that’s really difficult to try to even imagine that scenario.”
He is still a junior who has averaged 8.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while serving as the team’s point guard. While he was out, Cameron Boozer’s twin brother, Cayden Boozer, was the one who stepped up for that starter role and had 19 points during the first round of March Madness against Siena.
What Caleb Foster’s Return Could Mean For the Duke Blue Devils
While Caleb Foster’s stats do not seem that impressive, there is a reason why he is the starting point guard. The most important thing for Duke now is that this improves their rotation from seven players to eight. Even when Patrick Ngongba II returned to the roster to shore up their frontline, the Blue Devils still only had a seven-man rotation.
He is also seen as a leader in the court, and he can boost up some of the team’s best scorers. With him returning, it could boost up morale and improve their rotation.
