College sports analyst Aaron Torres has questioned Billy Donovan’s decision to reject the head coaching job at UNC shortly before his departure from the Chicago Bulls.
North Carolina reportedly expressed interest in signing Donovan in the offseason. However, he reportedly declined to engage in discussions while the Bulls were still competing. He has since stepped down as head coach of the Bulls, but UNC ultimately moved on and hired Michael Malone.
Fox Sports Radio host Aaron Torres was not happy with the entire situation.
“This dude could’ve been the North Carolina coach but got stubborn and refused to entertain the offer until the season ended. Now he’s out. Hmm, wonder if there might be another big job (or two) in college hoops open in the next year or so.”
With Donovan now officially available, some fans are questioning whether he misplayed his hand by waiting too long.
“He didn’t want the job and we didn’t want him,” a fan wrote.
“Hasn’t been a winner in over a decade,” another wrote.
Not everyone agreed with the criticism; several fans pushed back, arguing that he simply didn’t want to negotiate while still under contract.
“Maybe he wasn’t truly interested,” one reply noted, highlighting the possibility that the decision wasn’t about timing at all.
Another wrote: “He’s going back to Florida… that’s what he was waiting on.”
“It’s clear he didn’t want the UNC job,” another user wrote.
What’s next for Billy Donovan?
Donovan is now one of the most intriguing names on the market for both NBA and college basketball. While many expect him to land another NBA job soon, programs like the Kentucky Wildcats are being floated as potential landing spots, especially with pressure mounting on current head coach Mark Pope.
There’s also speculation around the Kansas Jayhawks, where longtime coach Bill Self has openly acknowledged he’s nearing the later stages of his career.
The Florida Gators, the program Donovan once led to back-to-back national championships, are also an option.
