Basketball can be unpredictable, and Alabama guard Mark Sears found himself at the center of an unexpected situation against LSU. After a strong season, his absence in the second half led to speculation among fans and analysts.
While injury concerns were ruled out, questions about the decision remained. Meanwhile, No. 2 Alabama prepares for a major showdown with No. 1 Auburn as Sears’ role becomes a topic of discussion.

Mark Sears’ Benching Raises Eyebrows as Alabama Prepares for Auburn
Guard Mark Sears has been a critical piece of Alabama’s success, earning a spot on the 2025 Wooden Award Late Midseason Watch List. The award honors the top player in college basketball, and Sears’ performance this season made him a worthy candidate.
He is the only player in the SEC to rank in the top five in both scoring (17.8 PPG) and assists (4.9 APG), proving his value in a conference stacked with talent.
Earlier in the season, he became the 82nd player in Division I history to surpass 2,500 career points. He currently has 2,578 points, second among active players.
Against LSU, however, things took an unexpected turn. Sears had a rough start, going 0-for-5 from the field and 0-for-2 from beyond the arc in the first half. It was only the second time this season that he was held scoreless in the first half. When the second half began, his absence became even more noticeable.
Cameras caught him on the bench, visibly upset, as teammates and coaches tried to console him. Initially, speculation about an injury spread, but the SEC Network later confirmed that he was not hurt, leading to further uncertainty about the decision to bench the star player.
Aden Holloway, a sophomore transfer from Auburn, filled in for the Sears at point guard. Alabama head coach Nate Oats’s move sparked discussions about whether Sears’ benching was purely a coaching decision or if there was more behind it. Oats was expected to address the situation postgame, but by then, Sears had played just 17 minutes and appeared visibly frustrated on the bench.
Sears’ mother, Lameka, weighed in on the situation with a statement on Instagram. While acknowledging her disagreement with the decision, she expressed respect for the coaching staff.
“As a Mother, while I may not agree with the decision, I recognize and respect Coach Oats and the entire Alabama coaching staff,” she said. “I did not agree with the choice to keep Mark on the bench for the entire second half, but I fully understand that in sports, especially at this level, these moments happen, and we all learn and grow from them.”
She also addressed her son’s emotions, which had drawn attention from broadcasters. Commentators noted that he appeared “emotional” on the bench, sparking various interpretations.
“Regarding personal moments that have been shared, I want to clarify that Mark’s emotion on the bench was a reflection of his passion and commitment to his teammates,” she explained. “We’re proud of how he continues to handle those moments with maturity and focus.”
Despite this unexpected benching, Sears remains one of Alabama’s most important players. His impact throughout the season has been undeniable, and his ability to bounce back will be crucial as the team moves forward.
Sears’ Role in Alabama’s Road Ahead
Alabama, ranked No. 2 in the AP Top 25, holds a 21-3 overall record with a 10-1 conference slate. The Crimson Tide is tied with the top-ranked Tigers for the top spot in the SEC, making their upcoming matchup even more significant.
Beyond Auburn, Alabama faces a challenging schedule with matchups against several ranked opponents remaining. Sears’ production will be essential if the team wants to maintain its high standing going into the postseason.
