Kirby Smart Fires Playful Shot at Lane Kiffin During SEC Media Days: “He Made Coach Saban Uncomfortable”

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart shared a lighthearted moment on SEC Media Days.

While speaking with reporter Chessa Bouche, Smart was asked about Lane Kiffin’s reputation as one of the sport’s biggest online “trolls.” The Georgia coach first played along with the question before delivering a humorous response.

“I don’t even know what troll means,” Smart joked. “People say that all the time. Can you define what a troll is for me?”

“Yep, that’s him,” Smart said with a smile. “He would say I look like a troll, so I wanted to make sure it wasn’t defined by appearance because certainly he is the Adonis of all college football coaches. He is very bright, he does an incredible job of evolving with college football. He was really good at that with us at Alabama. He made Coach Saban uncomfortable, let’s just say what it is, and he helped evolve that offense and bring it along and did some really good things in a day and age when people weren’t doing them.”

“I don’t like having to play his teams because I know what he knows, and I know how he thinks about defenses. He knows what he’s doing,” Smart added.

Kirby Smart Talks About Gunner Stockton

Smart also expressed confidence in Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton heading into the 2026 season.

During his SEC Media Days appearance, Smart shared a story from an offseason whitewater rafting trip, explaining how Stockton naturally emerged as a leader during the outing. The Georgia coach used the anecdote to highlight the junior quarterback’s ability to take command in unfamiliar situations.

”Quick story about Gunner. We took a leadership group to go whitewater rafting this offseason. It’s been up in North Carolina, whitewater rafting, and they, made this up for part of the boat. They explained that this is the most risky position. If you got in front of the boat, you may fall out. If you go over a rapid, if your nose down, you’re the first to go down into the water. Obviously, with life jacket we made it as safe as we possibly could. But he chose to jump into that seat. And I think that says a lot about who he is. He leads from the front, he takes hits, he embodies everything our program’s about, that toughness, and culture, and the love for his university,” Smart said.

With Georgia entering another season as one of the SEC favorites, Smart’s comments reflected the respect he still has for his former colleague and his player.
