Quarterback Lewis Seeks to Make Early Impact During Spring

Julian Lewis knows what the road ahead brings for him. The Colorado true freshman quarterback will begin his first spring practice on March 11. The six-foot, 185-pound, Carrollton, Georgia native will sit second on the initial depth chart entering the first practice, behind transfer Kaidon Salter. Lewis brings a pace, combined with accuracy and agility, to the huddle. He will need to apply those skills as he continues to develop his game. Andrew Ivins, Director of Scouting for 24/7 Sports, describes the freshman in this manner:

“Frequently in sync and tune with his wide receivers as he excels at throwing with pace and precision to the first and second levels. Has continued to progress as a full-field reader over the years and is the type of young signal-caller that will work through his keys and reads while looking off defenders. Can sense pressure and slip away from sacks, but shouldn’t exactly be viewed as a dynamic athlete that’s going to amplify a run game.”

The freshman signal caller will need to mature physically and on the field. Not to mention, the speed of the game, as opposed to the prep level, cannot be compared. Everything from receiver routes to the speed of the defense will immediately stun any incoming freshman. Additionally, defensive schemes will completely overshadow anything that Lewis saw in high school. From corners attempting to bait him to exotic blitz packages, things will not look like what they seem for the young passer.

Besides a 1.1-million-dollar NIL valuation, Lewis decommitted from USC with a mindset. Like most of America, he saw how Shedeur Sanders evolved into a first-round pick. Furthermore, Head Coach Deion Sanders and Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur crafted an offense around a talented quarterback who should hear his name during the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Back in November, Lewis detailed this connection on ESPN, proclaiming:

“I’m excited for the opportunity to get to work and compete. Colorado wasn’t recruiting me until I reclassified, so it really was perfect timing. This is only the beginning. I trust Coach Prime and [offensive coordinator Pat] Shurmur to help me become the player that I want to be.”

While Colorado snared former Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter in the transfer portal, Lewis could still win the starting job. Salter, although phenomenally blessed with athleticism as a dual threat, does not complete an overabundance of passes. For example, in his thirty-five-game career, the senior transfer failed to complete at least 60 percent of his throws eighteen times. Granted, he sports an 8.4 yards per attempt for his career, but relying on those two throws to win a game doesn’t fly in the Big 12.

Lewis will take the field in Boulder, looking to claim his spot. For America’s most bankable team from an attention standpoint, the spotlight will find him. Playing for Deion Sanders automatically means that the eyes of the sport will look at every throw and analyze wins and losses.

Deion Sanders, for all of the criticism lobbed at him, continues to build a platform for his team while attempting to protect them from harsh critique. However, he will not baby anyone and keeps his approach filled with candor. Julian Lewis can become the Buffaloes leader with a strong spring practice. From there, his ceiling remains high, undefined, and unwritten.
