After guiding the Troy Trojans to consecutive Sun Belt title seasons, Jon Sumrall already commanded an impressive salary, having received a contract extension in March 2023.
When long-time Tulane Green Wave head coach Willie Fritz left after the 2023 season, Troy could not keep their much-sought-after leader. Hired by Tulane in early December, he’s replacing the highest-paid Group of Five head coach, but what is Sumrall’s salary, contract, and net worth with the Green Wave?
Jon Sumrall’s Salary and Contract in 2024
According to multiple reports, including from NOLA.com and ESPN, Sumrall signed a six-year contract to become the head coach at Tulane. However, details of his salary weren’t released at the time of his hire, and none have come to light in the weeks following his appointment.
As such, we’re left to estimate how much the Green Wave head coach might earn.
Sumrall was given a salary raise as part of a contract extension with Troy signed in March 2023. Before his extension — which ran through 2026 — Sumrall was making $825,000, according to USA Today‘s coaching database. That figure was bumped up to $1 million from the 2023 season onwards, with extra funding also released for staffing allowances.
The Trojans put up a fight to keep him, reportedly offering $1.4 million and a further increase in staffing allowance. However, Sumrall decided to make the move to Tulane in December.
It would make sense for Sumrall to have taken a significant raise with the Green Wave, based on the amount he reportedly turned down and the information that we have about his predecessor.
Fritz made well over $2 million while coaching the Green Wave, with his 2023 salary totaling $2.8 million — or twice the amount that Troy was willing to pay to keep Sumrall with the Trojans.
Sumrall’s six-year contract is likely to be in that range, with significant opportunity for bonuses, especially with the expansion of the College Football Playoff.
In just his third year as a head coach, Sumrall is likely to be one of the highest-paid coaches in the Group of Five.
Sumrall’s Net Worth
Without salary details of his reported six-year contract, surmising Sumrall’s net worth is nigh-on impossible. His overall value to a football program, given the success he’s already achieved in his short head coaching career, likely surpasses that amount.
However, there are some publicly known details of Sumrall’s previous contracts that help build up a picture of his personal wealth accrued in his time as both a head coach and coordinator.
When Sumrall was in his last year as defensive coordinator of Kentucky, he made $675,000, below average for an SEC coordinator.

Once he moved to Troy, though, he took a pay increase that included up to $375,000 in potential bonuses. Those bonuses were not specified publicly, but it’s assumed that he received a large portion of that for a 12-2 debut season that included a conference championship and Cure Bowl win over UTSA.
The bonuses mentioned above were largely unchanged in the contract extension received in March 2023. In that campaign, Troy went 11-2, repeating as Sun Belt champions. Although he left before the Birmingham Bowl against Duke, Sumrall will have earned a substantial chunk of his potential bonuses.
With his salary set to be significantly more at Tulane than it was with Troy, Sumrall will receive a sizeable boost to his net worth for the 2024 season onwards — especially if he continues the winning ways the Green Wave have enjoyed in recent seasons.
