Jalen Milroe’s Arm Strength Turns Heads at Senior Bowl: ‘No Other QB Has Quite the Same Zip’

With the 2025 NFL Draft on the horizon, Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe has transitioned from a top quarterback prospect to a fairly controversial player. As Senior Bowl week unfolds in Mobile, Alabama, scouts are already closely analyzing his strengths and weaknesses.

Jalen Milroe’s Senior Bowl Performance Sparks Debate on Draft Stock

While some experts believe he could be a top selection alongside Miami Hurricanes QB Cam Ward and Colorado Buffaloes QB Shedeur Sanders, others view Jalen Milroe as a midround pick. Regardless of where he lands, one thing is certain—his physical abilities are generating plenty of discussion.

Milroe has often been compared to Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson due to his arm strength.

Many sports analysts talked about his actions; Devin Jackson highlighted these traits, pointing out Milroe’s impressive size and throwing power, though accuracy remains a concern. During the Senior Bowl practice on Jan. 28, he shared his observations on X (formerly Twitter):

“Jalen Milroe’s arm is so live in person. Ball flies off his hand, can really rev up the RPMs on his throws. No other QB has quite the same zip. #SeniorBowl”

This assessment cements Milroe’s reputation as a quarterback with a rare ability to generate intense velocity on his throws. His deep ball and ability to push passes into tight windows make him an intriguing option for NFL teams seeking a strong-armed playmaker. However, his mechanics and decision-making still require refinement.

When Milroe’s official measurements were released, his 6’1 1/2″, 220-pound frame confirmed his solid build for the NFL.

However, his hand size, measuring just 8 6/8 inches, has sparked concerns among scouts. This would be one of the smallest sizes in the entire league in terms of starting quarterbacks.

NFL teams often prefer quarterbacks with hands measuring at least nine inches, as smaller hands can lead to issues with ball security and grip, particularly in wet conditions.

Milroe’s career history includes 16 fumbles, and his struggles in Alabama’s rain-soaked bowl game against Michigan only reinforced these concerns.

Can Milroe Overcome His Hand Size Limitation?

Historically, quarterbacks with smaller hands have had mixed success in the NFL. While Michael Vick, Joe Burrow, Colin Kaepernick, and Jared Goff adapted to this limitation, many others struggled with maintaining control under pressure.

Milroe possesses a powerful arm that allows him to throw the ball deep with ease, but when forced to make quick, reactionary throws, his velocity sometimes drops. This suggests that grip strength may play a role in his inconsistencies.

As the draft process continues, he will have several opportunities to prove himself further, including the NFL Scouting Combine and Alabama’s Pro Day. If he can demonstrate improved mechanics, he may solidify himself as an early-round pick.
