WATCH: Jalen Milroe Lights Up Seahawks Camp Amid QB1 Snap Split Talk From Mike Macdonald

Jalen Milroe didn’t waste any time catching attention at Seattle Seahawks training camp after being drafted 92nd overall in the third round. He got his first taste of action at the Seahawks rookie minicamp on Friday afternoon.

The session felt like the first day of school for Milroe and the 70 other players— a mix of draftees, rookie free agents, tryout hopefuls, and a few second-year pros. It was a kind of fresh start for all of them, but Milroe was exceptional in the video.

While he made an impact on the field, there’s some buzz around head coach Mike Macdonald’s decision to place Milroe as the backup quarterback. This move could spark some debate among fans and in the community, as they wonder how this rookie will develop.

Since his college days, Milroe’s speed has consistently drawn comparisons to Lamar Jackson. His elite speed was on full display during the rookie minicamp as well, as shown in the training video. We also got glimpses of his dual-threat quarterback ability, as he connected on several deep throws, proving he can stretch the field.

This was just his first day, and the video was a sneak peek. While the former Alabama QB showed promise, he wasn’t yet exceptional. If he were exceptional, he’d likely be the starting quarterback. However, head coach Mike Macdonald has him listed as a backup for now.

Macdonald has already stated that Milroe is expected to get some playing time in 2025 because Sam Darnold, Seattle’s top free agent acquisition, is officially set to take most of the snaps as the starting quarterback.

“There’s always going to be an urgency in how we’re developing our players and how we’re training them,” Macdonald explained. “And Jalen’s going to be right there with everybody else. But yeah, Sam’s going to take, by far and away, over 90% of our snaps this year. However, Jalen deserves and earns the right to go out there, then we’ll do that.”

That doesn’t mean Milroe won’t see the field. Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has worked with versatile quarterbacks before, like Taysom Hill in New Orleans. That kind of creativity could help Milroe carve out a role even while Darnold leads the offense.

While Macdonald’s decision may stir debate in the community, Milroe seems to be fine with it. He’s embracing the new experience. After training at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, the 92nd overall pick said, “When I walked on the field, I really just acknowledged where I was at… It’s definitely cool to be an NFL quarterback, get my feet wet, get acclimated with everything.”

Wearing the No. 6 Seahawks jersey and taking the field is a fulfilling experience for Jalen Milroe. Right now, Sam Darnold will lead the QB role, but as a dual-threat QB, the third-round pick has the talent to help his team when the time comes.
