Rory McIlroy is gearing up to defend one of his career’s most important championships, the Masters. The golfer secured a remarkable win at Augusta National last year, not only completing his Masters title hunt after a decade, but also becoming only the sixth golfer in history to complete a career grand slam. Before defending his title, McIlroy appeared in a news conference recently, when he disclosed a major aspect of his confidence on the golf course.
This crucial factor here is none other than his close buddy and caddy, Harry Diamond, who has been carrying his bag for nearly a decade. They share a deep bond that dates back to their childhood. Rory McIlroy talked more about this bond during his press conference, stating that it keeps him away from all of the hatred and hostility on the golf field. According to Golf Monthly, he stated:
“I think they (the fans and media) don’t understand that he provides a level of comfort on the golf course for me that probably no one else in the world could. You know, if I make a mistake, or we make a mistake, I’m much less likely to get angry or get bothered by it because he’s the one on the bag rather than someone else. It’s much harder for me to get angry at myself or at him with him next to me than it would be with someone else.”
While the two of them have developed terrific chemistry, fans will not see them for a few upcoming days. McIlroy is not going to be competing in any professional tournaments and plans to practice at home for this year’s Masters, which begins on April 9.
Rory McIlroy describes the hole stretch where he won the 2025 Masters

During the same news conference, Rory McIlroy discussed his last campaign at Augusta National and how the tournament was a roller coaster for him. He took the lead and fell behind on multiple occasions, but McIlroy recently pinpointed the exact stretch of holes that led him to fulfill his decade-long pursuit of the coveted green jacket.
According to Golf Monthly, McIlroy explained:
“I feel like I won the Masters in a 15-hole stretch, the second nine on Friday, and then the six on Saturday. I shot 31 on the second nine on Friday, and I was five-under, I was five-under through five holes on Saturday…My total score for the tournament was 11-under, which got me into the playoff. I think a lot about the second nine on Friday and then the first few holes on Saturday because that was the stretch of golf that really won me the tournament.”
Rory McIlroy is currently going through a rough patch right now after suffering a back spasm during the Arnold Palmer Invitational. While the golfer returned to the 2026 Players Championship the following week, he was unable to give his all on the course and finished barely in the top 50.
