LIV Golf is still seeking clearance from the Official World Golf Rankings to award points based on the circuit’s tournaments. As a result, the league’s golfers strive to perform well at DP World Tour tournaments in order to retain their OWGR and qualify for more prestigious tournaments. One such golfer is Patrick Reed, who is currently in a dominant poisition of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic leaderboard.
Reed is leading the tournament after three rounds, with a total score of 14 under par. He is four shots ahead of second place, so the final round brings a lot of hope for him. On the third day of the tournament, the golfer shot the best round of his campaign in the event, finishing 5 under par. Following this round, the golfer did an interview in which he explained how important OWGR points are for him.
According to an X post by the Flushing It Golf, Patrick Reed explained,
“It’s very important to get the world ranking points, but really, for me, it’s more important to get the win early. Especially at a place that I absolutely love coming to. I was close two years ago, and hopefully we can play some solid golf and have and have an opportunity tomorrow.”
Reed has finished T10 and 2nd in the last two Dubai Desert Classics, so his performance in the last round this season will be crucial to finally get that win. Reed is currently ranked 44th in the Official World Golf Rankings, and winning the Dubai Desert Classic will help him stay in the top 50. While their golfers are looking to get their rank stable on the OWGR through these tournaments, on the other hand, LIV Golf is still in limbo for its OWGR point plan.
What is the status of LIV Golf’s OWGR application?

LIV Golf’s application to the OWGR last year was denied owing to format and eligibility difficulties. To counteract this, the tour has planned to undertake many changes to its format, including a complete overhaul before the 2026 season. Moving on, the league will stage a four-day tournament including 57 golfers. Following this, the circuit’s prospects of getting their application granted grew significantly.
Trevor Immelman, chairman of the Official World Golf Ranking’s governing body, discussed the LIV Golf application in December 2025, claiming that the tour has a good chance of being approved. According to the Golf Channel, Immelman said,
“Since the end of June, the governing board has endeavored to thoroughly evaluate the LIV Golf application. We remain committed to the OWGR’s mission, which requires honoring the meritocracy woven into the professional game. As such, discussions have been regular and remain ongoing. To be clear, progress has been made, but there is no decision to share at this time.”
Trevor Immelman further stated that the OWGR will continue to work closely with LIV Golf to ensure that the circuit maintains the game’s integrity and fairness.
