The No. 1 seed Indiana Hoosiers, after beating the likes of Alabama and Oregon in their playoff fixtures, are set to face the Miami Hurricanes away in the 2025 CFB National Championship.
Part of the Hoosiers’ success this season could be attributed to their star quarterback Fernando Mendoza’s consistent performances throughout the campaign.
Former Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow, ahead of the all-important natty, predicted how Mendoza is going to play well whilst also acknowledging how the quarterback needs to play with caution against the Miami defense. He also recognized how Miami’s super physical game and coverage play might cause Mendoza some issues.
“I think he’s going to play well, but I also think he has to play under control because Miami’s defense does a lot of different things. You know, they’re known for being super physical and getting after the quarterback, but I think it’s even more than that”, Tebow stated on the espn (0:00).
“I think what they do in coverage is very unique, and it’s not always sound, which gives a quarterback like Fernando Mendoza a lot of issues”, he further elaborated (0:13).
However, the former two-time national champion highlighted what Fernando’s role and responsibility should be against the hurricanes whilst also advising him to not put his team in harm’s way.
“I think early on, Fernando has to really understand what he’s seeing, not put their team in harm’s way, because both of these teams are going to try to dictate the style of play”, Tebow revealed (1:11).
Meanwhile, Fernando Mendoza has so far completed 257 of 352 passes for 3,349 yards, 41 touchdowns, and six interceptions, and it won’t be surprising if he adds to his stats positively by the end of the natty game.

While Fernando Mendoza’s attention will only be on helping the Hoosiers win the national championship, he could also join the record books with a rare milestone.

If Mendoza does go on to win the national championship with Indiana, the title, along with his 2025 Heisman Trophy win, will make him only the second quarterback to achieve this feat.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is the first quarterback to hold this rare feat, after being named the Heisman Trophy winner and winning the Natty with LSU in 2019.
