The Colorado Buffaloes held their first team meeting last week before a long offseason preparing for the 2025 season. Their head coach seemed engaged in the task at hand, yet days later, his name was linked to the Dallas Cowboys head coaching vacancy.
He reportedly met with one high-ranking Cowboys official before issuing a quote to ESPN regarding his future.
Coach Prime Seemingly Expresses Commitment to Colorado Program For the Near Future After Reported NFL Interest
Just days after reportedly expressing interest in the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching vacancy, Colorado head coach Sanders was once again in the news on Monday.
This time, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Sanders and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones held a phone call to discuss the franchise’s head coaching opening. Following the call, Coach Prime spoke with ESPN.
“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Deion Sanders told ESPN on Monday night. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team,… pic.twitter.com/OMossS9iOx

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” he said. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body, and the community.”
Coach Prime isn’t unfamiliar with Jones — before he was Coach Prime, he was simply Sanders, the Cowboys’ cornerback.
He played for the Cowboys from 1995-1999, earning both Pro Bowl and All-Pro accolades in four of his five seasons with the team. He was also a part of the franchise’s last Super Bowl victory in 1995. Famously, they haven’t been back since and are searching for a head coach who can return them to the promised land.
Former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract was not renewed last week, parting ways after five seasons at the helm, leaving an opening at the position. He produced a 49-35 record and three playoff appearances but only one playoff win.
That’s where the attractiveness of Coach Prime’s coaching acumen comes into play.
After taking over a 1-11 Buffaloes team in 2022, Sanders improved to four wins in 2023 before exploding onto the scene in 2024 with a 9-4 season. The Buffaloes remained in the thick of the playoff race before a late-season loss. They finished fourth in the Big 12 after finishing last in the Pac-12 just a season prior.

As recently as yesterday, he addressed the Colorado team as they began preparations for spring practice. He looked as committed to the program as ever, expressing his excitement for being able to simply coach.
“Now I can just be a coach, I don’t have to be a Dad… and I love that.”
Both of his sons, quarterback Shedeur and defensive back Shilo, entered their names in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Sanders is also putting actions over words in his commitment to Colorado. He’s been active in the recruiting and transfer portal cycle, especially at the quarterback position. He’s secured commitments from four-star prospect Julian “Juju” Lewis and accomplished starter Kaidon Salter, formerly of the Liberty Flames.
Coach Prime’s quotes to ESPN seem to have closed the door on NFL head coaching rumors — for now. Currently, he’s the head coach of the Buffaloes and looks poised to lead another talented squad in 2025.
