The Texas A&M Aggies had a strong season and looked like they could have contended in the SEC this past season. They went 8-4 in the regular season but started the season 7-1 and looked like real contenders. Unfortunately for them, losses to South Carolina, Auburn, and Texas at the end of the year ended their hopes of contending for an SEC Championship.

CFB Insider Josh Pate Picks the Texas A&M Aggies as a Sleeper SEC Powerhouse
On “Josh Pate’s College Football Show” on Friday, Feb. 14, Josh Pate discussed the Texas A&M Aggies heading into next season. He talked about them as a team that could be a powerhouse if they make the right hires.
“Is A&M capable of being a powerhouse? I say yes. Someone else says, ‘Well, if they’re capable, why haven’t they ever been one?’ And I always say, ‘Because they haven’t hired right.’ Jimbo was there.
“Jimbo wasn’t the guy to take them to that level. Kevin Sumlin wasn’t the guy to take them to that level. Maybe Mike Elko is. Remains to be seen, but my stance has always been clear on them and that is, just because they haven’t been, doesn’t mean they can’t be.
“It’s a great sleeping giant program. The ingredients are there, but I think it’s going to be hard for anyone to sustain an elite run. The evaluation part of that program’s really good.”
Pate continued, “I think the developmental part of that program is really good. I think there will be a few places out there that evaluate and develop talent, as well as Mike Elko and his staff will at Texas A&M. You gotta execute. You still gotta go out there and win. They gotta do things they haven’t done.”
“Can they do it consistently? I have some pretty solid belief in them. But to be a powerhouse, you’re talking about stuff A&M’s never done before.”

Despite having a strong program that can compete financially with other top teams in the SEC, the Aggies have not had much success since joining the SEC in 2012. They have not appeared in an SEC Championship Game despite only having one season with a losing record.
However, Pate thinks things could be changing for the Aggies. With Elko entering his second season as the team’s head coach, pate believes that the Aggies have what it takes to grow into a powerhouse in the SEC. Only time will tell.
