The Miami Hurricanes took a big step forward this past season. They had 10 wins, reaching double-digit wins for the first time since 2017. A major reason for their success was the addition of quarterback Cam Ward through the transfer portal.
Ward had an immediate impact and finished the season as a Heisman Trophy finalist. Now, many fans are concerned that transfer Carson Beck will not have the same success.

Greg McElroy Explains Why Carson Beck Could Have a Similar Impact as Cam Ward in Miami
Greg McElroy hosted “Always Football with Greg McElroy” on Wednesday, Feb 12. On the episode, he discussed Beck’s addition to Miami via the transfer portal. He pointed out that Beck could have a similar impact to Ward because he came from a similar situation in Georgia to Cam Ward, who came from Washington State before joining Miami.
“You look at Carson Beck, we’ll start there. A lot of excitement surrounding Miami is probably hedged because of Cam Ward’s departure and how good Cam Ward was. And the perception that Carson Beck is maybe a little up and down.”
McElroy continued, “Prior to arriving in Miami, you know what Cam Ward was? He was a guy who played kind of out of structure an awful lot. he took a lot of risks with the football. He was kind of a one-man show and didn’t have a lot of help around him at Washington State.
“Well, if you look at last year’s version of Georgia. What was Georgia offensively? You might think Carson Beck had unbelievable talent around him. No, he didn’t. Carson Beck had a running back in Trevor Etienne, who was in and out of the lineup. He had a receiving core that led the country in drops. He had an offensive line that at times got completely overwhelmed.”
McElroy finished, “Carson Beck, if you look at where Cam Ward was and where Carson Beck. What was put on Cam Ward’s shoulders at Washington State is comparable to what was put on Carson Beck’s shoulders.”
It is certainly an argument that makes sense. The Hurricanes have a deep roster that was only improved through the transfer portal this offseason.

Mario Cristobal proved last season that he could thrive with a new QB, and Beck is not an ineffective option. While Beck does not have Ward’s athletic abilities, he proved to be effective in Georgia despite limited help in his offense.
