LSU football head coach Brian Kelly is about to start his fourth season in charge in Baton Rouge. Only a few players have been with Kelly his entire time with the Tigers, including quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who is in his fifth year.
Nussmeier had a very impressive 2024 season, and he decided to return for the 2025 season. Now, he’s currently one of the favorites to win the next Heisman Trophy. Some analysts are even predicting him to be the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

LSU’s Brian Kelly Reveals His Criticisms of QB Garrett Nussmeier
QB Garrett Nussmeier is one of Brian Kelly’s most loyal lieutenants, as he’s been with him the entire four years at LSU. Kelly recently spoke to the media after spring practice, and he had some interesting critiques about his quarterback. He complimented Nussmeier’s arm strength but also hilariously hinted that he still needs some fine-tuning.
Brian Kelly on LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier: “He’s got a cannon, I just wish it came with instructions.”
“He’s either dropping dimes or hitting our trainers in the head. No in-between. One play he looks like Joe Burrow, the next he’s launching it into the marching band. I told him… pic.twitter.com/pPtuuvC8MW

“He’s got a cannon, I just wish it came with instructions,” Kelly said. “He’s either dropping dimes or hitting our trainers in the head. No in-between. One play, he looks like Joe Burrow, the next, he’s launching it into the marching band. I told him the SEC doesn’t give style points for accidental fireworks.”
Kelly also told reporters after their spring practice that Nussmeier was quick to commit to him after the players’ exodus following the coaching change in 2021.
“Coach, I’m a Tiger… I just want to let you know, I’m going to be here,” Nussmeier told Kelly shortly after he arrived at LSU.
“I think we come full circle, and you see that kind of steadfast commitment to being here at LSU. And I think he’s going to reap the benefits of that,” Kelly said of the quarterback’s commitment.
In the 2024 season, Nussmeier started 13 games, throwing for 4,043 yards and 29 touchdowns and 3 rushing touchdowns.
