Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will be missing Bo Bichette in Toronto after the star shortstop signed a three-year, $126 million contract with the New York Mets. Both players started their careers with the Mets and even went to the 2025 World Series together.
After learning the news of Bichette’s signing, the Blue Jays’ $500 million star was sad, as he said:
“Of course, I feel sad after playing with him for so many years, but like I’ve always said, this is a business, and you have to look out for what’s best for you and your family… I wish him the best. We won’t be teammates anymore, but our friendship will last forever.”
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette’s partnership dates back to their MLB debuts together in 2019. They went from sweeping the bottom in the AL East rankings to winning the AL pennant last season. While Guerrero Jr. will remain a Jay since he is signed to a 14-year, $500 million contract, Bichette will start a new chapter in New York.
Bo Bichette’s Contract Details With Mets
Bo Bichette’s three-year, $126 million contract comes with opt-outs after the first and second seasons. There’s a $5 million opt-out bonus tied. If the shortstop opts in for only one season, he reportedly would earn about $47 million for that year. If he stays for two seasons, he will collect about $89 million.
Moreover, since Bichette declined the qualifying offer from the Blue Jays, the Mets will lose their second- and fifth-highest draft picks in 2026 and $1 million from their international bonus pool. Toronto will receive a compensatory draft pick after the fourth round.
Bo Bichette was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2016 and within three years, he made his MLB debut, finishing his rookie season with a .311 batting average and .959 OPS in 46 games. The shortstop earned All-Star nods in 2021 and 2023 and was the American League’s hits leader in 2021 and 2022.
Overall in 750 games in his career, Bichette has slashed .294/.337/.469 with .806 OPS to go along with 111 home runs, 437 RBIs and 60 stolen bases.
