Notching his tenth win of the campaign in dominant fashion and still not having a place on the AL All-Star team, Sonny Gray might be the biggest snub of all time. The Red Sox ace is having a monumental campaign in Boston, contending with an impressive 10-1 record, a 2.61 ERA, 82 strikeouts, and a 1.10 WHIP so far this season.
In Saturday’s game against the Angels, Gray delivered six strong innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits, issuing two walks, and striking out seven batters. The Red Sox won 8-1, securing the series victory in LA.
After the game, Gray spoke with the media, where he was asked about his feelings on not being selected as an All-Star starter despite his impressive record. The Boston pitcher responded honestly, expressing his disappointment with the ballot results.
“I mean, I was disappointed, for sure. Just being honest, you know, y’all know me well enough now/ I’m just being honest, I was disappointed, for sure. Happy for Ranger [Suarez] and happy for Chappy [Aroldis Chapman], for sure. Very well deserving, both of those guys, but a little selfishly, I was disappointed, but yeah, I don’t know,” Gray said.
Gray’s All-Star snub caught the attention of the baseball fraternity, with senior MLB insider Jon Heyman and other fans criticizing the voting results.
Sonny Gray Used the Midsummer Classic Snub as Fuel to Rattle the Angels Last Night
When asked if he used being snubbed as motivation during his start against the Angels on Saturday, Gray said the snub definitely contributed to his strong performance at Angel Stadium and also expressed his displeasure with the decision.
“I used a lot of stuff for fuel tonight, you know? Maybe that was a little part of something, but yeah, I mean, it was, you know, I was a little bummed, for sure,” Gray said.
Gray will be back on the mound one more time before the All-Star break, making his next start in the series opener against the Mets at Citi Field on Friday.
