Looking to build on their 2025 success, the Boston Red Sox have plenty of work to do in what remains of the offseason. One of the areas of the roster that requires attention is the infield.
For most of the offseason, re-signing Alex Bregman was considered to be a priority. However, the Chicago Cubs ended up securing the veteran third baseman’s services.
With Bregman now off the table, former Red Sox infielder Lou Merloni, who now works as an analyst for NESN, believes the organization should look to sign Bo Bichette. He also opined that the Red Sox should be open to offering Bichette a contract in the range of $350 million.
“DHs get a 150-155 (million). Bregman got more than that, he plays everyday, he’s a plus defender. Yes, he doesn’t hit home runs, but still, he helps you for nine full innings, not just when you’re hitting. Bo Bichette is in a similar category,” Merloni said (Timestamp: 3:48).
“Just that he’s four years younger, so let’s add four years. Let’s go to nine (years) at 35 (million a year). Depending on who (else) is invlolved, be ready for 10 (years) 350 (million). Welcome to free agency. Nothing makes sense, nothing is rational, this is what you have to be willing to do,” he added.
Bo Bichette enjoyed a superb 2025 season with the Toronto Blue Jays. Batting .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs, he helped the team win the AL East for the first time since 2015.
The Red Sox Must Move Fast If They Are To Sign Bo Bichette Before A Rival
Although Bo Bichette seems to fit the Red Sox’s infield needs quite well, Boston is not the only team looking for quality infielders this winter.
In an article published on Friday, The Athletic’s Matt Gelb reported that the Philadelphia Phillies have already scheduled a meeting with Bichette, which is set to take place in the coming days.
“Bichette is expected to meet with Phillies officials on a video conference call in the coming days, sources said. The club’s interest in Bichette is legitimate,” Gelb wrote.
If the Red Sox are to beat their rivals to the punch in their pursuit of Bo Bichette, they will have to move fast. Otherwise, they could see another one of their infield targets evade their grasp.
