Oklahoma Sooners starting pitcher Cord Rager’s father’s postgame reaction captured the intense emotions parents experience while their children compete under bright lights. His reaction came after Rager overcame early adversity from the North Carolina Tar Heels to help Oklahoma clinch a 9-3 Game 1 win at the 2026 College World Series Finals.

“I was as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs,” Rager’s father, Chad, told SoonerScoop’s George Stoia on Saturday. “He’s a mentally tough kid. I don’t think there’s anything you can throw at that kid that he’s not going to be able to stay calm and focused and work his way through.”

Rager had played well in the early rounds of the tournament. However, he faced immediate disaster in the first inning against North Carolina, surrendering four consecutive hits and three runs.

After the early setback, the freshman pitcher showed composure in the next four innings, shutting down the oddsmakers’ favorite. Rager finished the outing with five strikouts in five innings, giving up a walk and three runs.

Gavyn Jones took over from Rager, recording 2.1 scoreless innings, sritiking out four. LJ Mercurius pitched the final 1.2 innings of the game, recording two strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Deiten LaChance spearheaded Oklahoma’s offensive explosion with two home runs and three RBIs. Five Oklahoma players logged multi-hit games.

Cord Rager Talks About His Game 1 Performance

Oklahoma Sooners pitcher Cord Rager reflected on his Game 1 performance in the postgame press conference. The left-handed pitcher highlighted how shift from individual pressure to team-first responsibility rescued his performance.

“After the first inning, I stopped playing for myself,” Rager said. “I just started playing for the guys around me, for the team, and the, you know, I really had to try to be a pitcher today, because I didn’t have my best stuff.”

“So, I just, afer the first, I just really just put my head down, try to work the process Skip’s (Oklahoma’s head coach Skip Johnson) always taught me, and grind,” he added.

The 2026 College World Series Finals continue with Game 2 on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET. ESPN will air the game. DraftKings Sportsbook list Oklahoma as a +120 underdog and North Carolina as a -154 favorite.

Oklahoma will secure the trophy with a Game 2 victory. A loss would mean the two wills play a deciding Game 3 on Monday.
