MLB Insider Issues Verdict on Yankees’ Chances of Landing Paul Skenes in Free Agency

The New York Yankees continue to be linked with 2025 NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes in different ways. First, it was because of his girlfriend, Olivia Dunne, the second because of the pitcher himself and now because of his rising status in the league.

The flamethrower is under team control with the Pittsburgh Pirates through the 2029 season. However, when he becomes a free agent, there will be a huge demand for him. In this scenario, the Yankees appear to be a potential landing spot, and MLB insider Julian Guilarte shared why he thinks so.

“I’ll throw some gas on that fire because, first of all, when his time is up and the contract comes, the Yankees will have everyone off the books except Max Fried,” the insider said. “So they technically would have the money to pay for him. He definitely wants to be a Yankee, I don’t even need to know that. And we’re going to get salary-capped, so there’s only going to be so much.”

Guilarte’s co-host, Keith McPherson, added the notion that his girlfriend, Olivia Dunne, wants to stay in New York. The former LSU Tigers gymnast and social media star has even purchased a home in Manhattan following her failed attempt to buy Babe Ruth’s former apartment.

Further, Guilarte also delved into why the New York Mets will not be the potential landing spot for Skenes and ruled out the Dodgers as well, saying he doesn’t want to go west.

“I think if there’s no salary cap, I don’t think there’s a number, whether we’re looking at four or five, it’s going to be something ridiculous,” Guilarte added. “It’s going to be crazy, but they’re going to be able to pay because that money will be off the books, which is why Cole’s money will be off unless they keep him.”

Pirates GM Denies Potential Trade for Paul Skenes

Since the Pirates are almost never a strong contender for the postseason, several of their key figures are always on the trade speculation. However, that’s not the case for Skenes, as the Pirates know how big a star he has become, so it makes no sense to trade him until his final season comes around.

Pirates GM Ben Cherington has publicly stated that Skenes will be a Pirate in 2026, suggesting Pittsburgh isn’t planning to trade him this offseason.

It remains to be seen if there is a potential for a trade from the Pirates’ end for Skenes.
