Free agent Marcell Ozuna is receiving interest from a couple of franchises this late in the offseason. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees are keeping an eye on first baseman Ty France as they think about replacing veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.
Let’s learn more about both of these updates.
Marcell Ozuna Emerges As Padres’ Prime Target
The San Diego Padres are reportedly looking for a plug-and-play offensive bat and Marcell Ozuna could fit right in. MLB insider Mike Rodriguez reported from his sources that Ozuna is drawing interest from the NL West team. He also added that the Pittsburgh Pirates are interested in acquiring a three-time All-Star.
Ozuna’s left-handed power makes him an appealing depth option for teams that need designated hitting strength. However, he had a dip in his performance from the year ago. He slashed .302/.378/.546 in 2024 to .232/.355/.400 in 2025.
The Padres don’t have anyone to play the designated hitter role on the team. Since he is already 35, expect a short-term contract for him this offseason.
Yankees Loom Large on Ty France
The New York Yankees had Paul Goldschmidt play first base in 2025. The veteran has turned free agent, leaving a hole for the Yankees to fill if they don’t want to go with Ben Rice. Apart from the former NL MVP, the Yankees are considering an alternative first base option. They are among the several teams interested in free agent Ty France. The Yankees have reportedly talked to France’s camp.
The 31-year-old slashed .257/.320/.360 with 25 doubles, seven home runs, and 52 RBIs in 138 games last season. Previously with the Seattle Mariners from 2021-23, he batted .271 with 50 home runs and 214 RBIs, including an All-Star appearance. The 2022 All-Star won the 2025 Gold Glove at first base.
Apart from the Yankees, the New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, and San Diego Padres are also interested in him. The Yankees are looking to add right-handed hitting and defensive flexibility on their roster as Spring Training approaches.
It remains to be seen if their interest in France results in a potential contract.
