Juan Soto’s nonchalant reaction to a heckling fan fueled the rivalry between New York and Philadelphia sports fans. The incident happened during the New York Mets’ series finale against their National League East rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies, on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park.
A fan, donning a Ray Halladay jersey, aggressively taunted Soto from the left field stands. The fan flipped the Mets outfielder, who stared the fan down with an unfazed look. Multiple social media profiles shared the viral standoff.
Sports fans on social media debated the incident on X. A section of fans criticized the Phillies supporter. Meanwhile, the others pointed out the attitude of New York fans after the Knicks won against the San Antonio Spurs to claim the 2026 NBA title.
While Soto appeared to get the win over the fan, his team lost 6-2 to the Phillies, losing the series 2-1. Mets had won Game 1 on Friday, 6-4, before they suffered a 15-3 Game 2 defeat on Saturday.
Soto was the start in the Mets’ Game 1 win. He hit two homers and drew a walk in five plate appearances. However, he only managed a hit in three at-bats in Game 2. He recoreded a hit and drew a walk in four plate appearances in Game 3.
Juan Soto Reacts to Mets Struggles
The New York Mets (34-43) are at the bottom of the NL East division. They have split wins and losses in their last 10. A major concern for the team has been their starting pitchers, who have given up early leads to their opponets.
A reporter asked Juan Soto about this issue of Mets after Game 3 against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. “It’s tough, you know,” Soto replied. “It’s really tough to give up the lead right away, but it’s part of the game. We’ve got to be better. We’ve got to play better baseball, and go out there and execute.”
Up next for Soto and the Mets is a four game home series against the Chicago Cubs. Game 1 will commence at 7:10 p.m. ET at Citi Field, New York. Kodai Senga is the probable starting pitcher for the Mets, while his compatriot Shota Imanaga will likely be on the mound for the Cubs.
