“What A Terrible Teammate” – Fans Question Rafael Devers’ Pinch Runner Objection After Controversy In Giants Vs Marlins

San Francisco Giants’ 1B Rafael Devers became a focal point of discussion after the team was swept by the Marlins in Miami on Sunday. The loss marked the sixth series sweep the Giants have suffered this season. The incident occurred in the ninth inning, with the Giants down 2-1, when Devers objected to the manager’s decision to replace him at first base with pinch runner Jonah Cox.

The 29-year-old Dominican was seen refusing and waving his finger, signaling no to the dugout, as Cox stood nearby, unsure of what to do. After a brief protest, Devers reluctantly stepped away from first base and returned to the dugout in frustration. The Giants ultimately lost the game 2-1, ending the series on a disappointing note.

Fans shared their reactions to the viral moment from Sunday’s series finale, with many questioning Devers’ protest against the pinch runner’s inclusion when the ballclub had a real opportunity to level the game in the ninth.

Devers ended the series finale 0-for-3 and drew just one walk in the ninth, after which he was ultimately replaced by the speedy Cox.

Giants Manager Shunned Rumors of a Falling Out With Rafael Devers

Giants manager Tony Vitello spoke to NBC Sports Bay Area’s postgame broadcast, reflecting on the disappointing series against the Marlins. Vitello was also asked about the controversial moment involving an unhappy Devers and whether there was any falling-out between the two. In his response, Vitello categorically dismissed these rumors.

“I don’t have a problem with Rafi. We talk every day. He’s one of the most entertaining guys to be around. He probably wants to win as much as anybody in that clubhouse. He wants to stay in the game. Also, we’ve talked during this road trip about how he feels, and part of that is he’s 100% good to go running-wise,” Vitello said.

The Giants are now 31-46 for the season, placing fourth in the NL West standings, 17.5 games behind the division leaders and incumbent World Champions, the LA Dodgers. The Giants will now return home to begin a six-game homestand at Oracle Park against the Athletics and the Braves, starting Tuesday.
