Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor engaged in a brief verbal clash with former teammate and Guardians catcher Austin Hedges during the series finale at Progressive Field on Sunday. The incident occurred in the sixth inning when Naylor was hit by a pitch and awarded first base by the home plate umpire.
As he jogged to the bag, Hedges challenged the call, claiming the batter extended his elbow. In response, an upset Naylor made a rude remark, prompting Hedges to allegedly reply:
“No one likes you.”
The confrontation quickly eased, and the Guardians ultimately won the game 6-5.
Fans were quick to share their mixed reactions to the viral moment during Sunday’s game.

Josh Naylor and Austin Hedges Were Teammates for Four Years
Naylor and Hedges spent four full seasons together on the Guardians and San Diego Padres, with their most recent collaboration in 2024 before Naylor was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks and then to the Mariners, who re-signed him last offseason.
Both players are having disappointing campaigns at the plate. Hedges has a .269 batting average, one home run, nine RBIs, and a .694 OPS, while Naylor is hitting .256 with eight home runs, 34 RBIs, and a .688 OPS.
The Mariners are 42-43 on the season and will begin a six-game homestand against the Angels and Blue Jays, while the Guardians are 44-40 and will continue their 10-game homestand by hosting the Rangers for a three-game series starting Monday.
