Baker Mayfield, former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback and 2017 Heisman Trophy winner, has a deep connection to OU that extends beyond football. He celebrated his alma mater’s College World Series triumph over North Carolina in Omaha, NE, despite his busy offseason schedule.
Mayfield, a three-year starter for the Sooners, hosted the annual youth football camp at his alma mater. In an interview, he expressed his love for OU and the importance of winning the baseball national championship. He praised the team for its exciting run and noted that he has known coach Skip Johnson since childhood.
“Small world, I’ve known Skip Johnson since I was 10 or 11. I grew up playing baseball with his son when I was a kid. It’s easy to support OU, obviously, but even easier to support Skip. That was big-time. The team got hot when it mattered. Congrats to those guys,” Mayfield said.

Mayfield’s wife, Emily, is from Nebraska. The couple planned to attend the CWS in Omaha, but couldn’t because of their busy schedules. The Buccaneers QB enrolled at OU in 2014 after a 2013 walk-on season at Texas Tech. Mayfield sat out 2014, then started for three seasons, leading Oklahoma to a 33-6 record and winning the 2017 Heisman Trophy.
