The Boston Red Sox would need to move fast before this trade deadline if they want to improve. While delving into hypothetical superstar trade targets, one MLB analyst proposed the name of Kansas City Royals star Bobby Witt Jr.
Red Sox insider Rob Bradford appeared on Friday’s show of “Jones & Keefe,” where he revealed getting a call from someone about what if Boston trades for Witt. Bradford discussed the possible Red Sox stars that could be involved in this trade, including Roman Anthony, and why it would still be a great bet.
“What you would need to trade for Bobby Witt, obviously Roman Anthony, Kyson Witherspoon, Franklin (Arias), whoever it is, would they be upset? And I said, no. No, they wouldn’t be upset because Bobby Witt is the absolute guy,” Bradford said.
“Bobby Witt is the next David Ortiz. If you’re going to find a guy who should be the foundation of your organization, the centerpiece guy for an organization, it is a guy like Bobby Witt.”
Bradford well understands that this was why Kansas City locked Witt up on an 11-year, $288.7 million contract in February 2024. Despite knowing that he’s untouchable, Bradford pinches the Red Sox to make a run at him.
“And then you go down the list to Zach Neto or CJ Abrams, whoever it is,” Bradford added. “But aim big, do your best, and then move on, and make sure you move on before there are 15 minutes left before the trade deadline ends.”
Red Sox’s 15-Game Win Streak Inspires Trade Deadline Hopes
The Red Sox changed the whole conversation around them regarding the trade deadline with their franchise-tying 15-game winning streak, which ended in the second game of the doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles.
By vaulting themselves into the third AL wildcard spot, the Red Sox players have forced chief baseball officer Craig Breslow to shift their obvious-looking potential sellers strategy to considering additions that could strengthen the roster for a potential playoff run.
Ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline, the Red Sox are in need of a right-handed power hitter, depth in the rotation and upgrades in the infield.
However, despite the surge, the Red Sox may take a safe approach, where they are neither obvious sellers nor buyers. It remains to be seen if they make any star additions before the deadline.
