New York Yankees star Jasson Dominguez was unhappy after he didn’t get the ABS challenge despite tapping his helmet. The incident happened at the top of the seventh inning with one out against Tampa Bay Rays reliever Casey Legumina.
Legumina threw it low and the umpire called it a strike. Immediately after, Dominguez tapped his helmet. But to his surprise, the umpires either didn’t notice it or might have just ignored it for whatever reason. When the umpire asked him to get back on the plate, the Yankees star was frustrated for obvious reasons.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone also walked out to have a chat with the umpire, trying to know why the challenge was denied. The third base umpire also got in the mix.
Fans on X, who watched this clip, were fuming at the umpires for their ignorance on that pitch.
“Umps really want to put themselves out of work,” one fan wrote.
Three pitches later, Dominguez went down on strikes. In the 5-1 Yankees win, Dominguez went 0-for-3, walked once and also scored.
Jasson Dominguez Taking Opening Day Roster Snub in Stride
After the Yankees extended Trent Grisham, it in itself was a signal that Jasson Dominguez was not going to start the season on the active roster. However, the Yankees had him in their plans and the injury to Giancarlo Stanton one month into the season allowed the outfielder to get back in the fold of the major league roster.
Despite starting the season in the minors, Dominguez took the stint in stride, saying this is what sports are all about.
“I’ve had very good moments, very bad moments, but that’s what sports are about and those are things I can’t control,” Domínguez said this week. “I do control my part, which is to come and do my job, try to help the team as best as I can and prepare myself as best as I can.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone also lauded the outfielder’s spirits despite the disappointment of roster snub early in the season.
“You wonder how that’s going to affect a young player and all he did was go out,” Boone said. “I thought he had an excellent spring. Had the same good attitude that he normally does and then goes back down to Triple-A to start the year, gets off to a good start and earns the opportunity to come back when a spot opened up.”
Just nine games with the Yankees, Dominguez injured his shoulder, but upon his return, his place was there in the outfield regularly given the injuries to Aaron Judge and Trent Grisham.
In 30 games this season, Dominguez has slashed a .209/.250/.391 batting line with four home runs and five stolen bases.
