A controversial moment happened in the seventh inning between the Texas Longhorns and the Georgia Bulldogs on Tuesday night’s College World Series game.
Leading 1-0 against Texas in seventh, Georgia’s Ryan Black hit a blooper falling between left and center field. Texas center fielder Dariyan Pendergrass ran a lot of distance to grab a insane catch but as he rolled on the ground the ball dropped out of its hand.
Initially the umpires called Black out but upon replay, it was overturned as Black was declared safe.
This led to one user recalling the heartbreaking call in the 2014 NFC Divisional playoff game between the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers. Wide receiver Dez Bryant caught a crucial 4th-down and reached the goal line. But as his elbow hit the ground, the ball popped loose. Since then, NFL has maintained, that the catcher needs to be in complete control of the ball even after falling.
Fans were left shocked with the decision that led Black to take first base.
“Insane they call out on the field and then overturn it. Insane,” one fan commented.
“I’m shocked they overturned this; that feels like the type of play that is too close to overturn,” another wrote.
“I’m an OU fan and that was such a horses**t call,” one fan reacted.
“Definition of a “catch” includes specific verbiage…… ‘release of the ball is voluntary and intentional,'” another remarked.
“i wanna be biased but man that looks like a catch. Only argument i can see is that at the very end it looks like it’s rolling on the top so its assumed that it’s like that the entire way. Even if that is what they’re assuming the call on the field was catch, hard to overturn that,” one fan noted.
“Looks like a catch, but by rule it isn’t a catch,” one fan said.
“A joke of a call to go along with the joke of a HP umpire tonight,” another fan added.
Georgia Bulldogs Defeats Texas 2-0 in College World Series Game
The key SEC matchup in Omaha saw two complete game pitchers returning: Joey Volchko and Caden Aoki.
Georgia made the first splash on the scoreboard with the help of RBI double from leadoff hitter Tre Phelps that led to first baseman Brennan Hudson reaching home to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the top of fifth inning.
Then, moments after Ryan Black survived a controversial catch call, the right fielder made a heads up running play to reach home on centerfielder Rylan Flujo’s flyball to shortstop. This gave Georgia an important 2-0 lead in the game.
