Oregon State Beavers pitcher Trey Morris’ transfer decision sparked widespread outrage among a plethora of college baseball fans. The unregulated nature of the modern transfer portal is the main reason for blowback from baseball purists.
Morris is Oregon State’s All-American freshman. The left-handed pitcher compiled a 7-0 record across 16 appearances in his freshman year. He pitched 59 innings, posting an elite 1.98 ERA. His performances earned him All-American honors from Perfect Game and the NCBWA.
However, Oregon State suffered a season-ending loss to the Oregon Ducks, their arch rivals, in the NCAA Eugene Regional final. The loss coincided with the departure of Beavers’ pitching coach Rich Dorman to the Florida Gators.
These circumstances likely influenced Morris’ decision to submit his name to the NCAA transfer database, with the controversial “Do Not Contact” tag attached. Pete Nakos of On3 broke news of the Morris’ portal filing on Monday.
The “Do Not Contact” tag often means the player already have determined his landing spot. This prompted outraged reactions from college baseball fans on X.
“If we are going to take legal action against committed players who are paid to leave there should be legal action against this,” a fan noted. “Clear tampering and bribery happening.”
“But how will he find his new home if he has do not contact???” a fan seconded the thought. “Tamper much? NCAA and this portal stuff is such a joke.”
“I love the “I have already been tampered and contacted by an SEC team” tag in the portal,” a fan sarcastically wrote.
Some fans predicted massive financial bidding war among colleg baseball’s elite programs.
“I feel South Carolina is gonna snag this one,” a fan wrote.
“I feel like this kid is heading to the Aggies for some reason,” another fan shared his prediction.
Morris is 6’2″ tall and weighs 251 lb, per Oregon State Beavers website. He leverages his sturdy frame to generate a heavy, deceptive four-pitch mix.
Morris’ primary weapon is a low-90s fastball. He effectively tunnels this pitch with a sharp slider, looping curveball and a fading changeup. Moreover, his exceptional command allows him to limit walks and avoid hard contact.
