Mets legend Darryl Strawberry discussed his faith and how committing to the church and spirituality gave his life new purpose.
During a faith-focused discussion live on Fox News on Saturday, the eight-time All-Star said he was a sinner and sought a solution to his life’s problems. He then proclaimed that Jesus Christ is the ultimate being, and praised his mother and wife, Tracy, for guiding him back to the church.
“It wasn’t always like that. It was more about worldly things and living a life separated from God. And I was a sinner and I needed a savior. And I’m glad that I came to that point and realized I needed to find a new way of life. And you just don’t get there by yourself. You know, that’s from Mama’s prayers. And that’s from my wife, Tracy, leading me back into church,” Strawberry said.“There’s a great purpose for all our lives. Jesus is the way. All these other ways that we go, we find ourselves in darkness, and we find ourselves trying to fill the empty void with all this stuff, and it just does not fill it. So Christ is the only one that can fill that empty void. He’s completed the task at the Cross of Calvary for every last one of us so we would experience our abundant life,” he added.
Strawberry played 17 seasons in the major leagues with four teams, spending nearly half his career in Queens. He played a key role on the Mets’ 1986 championship team, which secured the franchise’s second World Series title. Strawberry went on to win two more titles with the Yankees in 1996 and 1999.

Darryl Strawberry appeared alongside the MLB Central broadcasters to reflect on the Mets’ remarkable 1986 season and his time in Queens ahead of the 40th anniversary of their championship victory. He also compared the New York Knicks’ NBA title to the Mets’ ’86 championship.
“When you play in New York, and you have success here. People never forget about who you are, and I think 40 years are coming up; that championship team was an incredible team, ’86, and the Knicks remind me of what we were back in ’86. They embraced the city, just like we did, and they played as a team, and that’s a tremendous feeling playing in New York and the pressure that you have to play under here,” Strawberry said.
The Mets are currently struggling, holding a 41-58 record and ranked last in the NL East. They are 17 games below .500 and 16 games behind division-leading Atlanta Braves.
